What gets lost when you blow up an Appalachian mountain

an excerpt from a recent New York Times article on mountaintop removal coal mining -

---...---

“Not every place on the mountains has waterfalls like Bad Branch,” Ms. Chapman-Crane said. “But this is pretty much what it’s like on the mountains here. The forests of the Appalachian range are like a northern rain forest.”

Mary Yoder, who had volunteered to come on the trip for her congregation, Columbus Mennonite Church in Columbus, Ohio, asked, “So this is the kind of place that gets blown up in mountaintop removal?”

Mr. Chapman-Crane replied, “This is what would be lost, is lost, when they blast a mountaintop.”

Happy Halloween!!!!

hi everyone
hope you are doing really well

Happy Halloween!

the Kidfest was so great
David S.L. got some really sweet pictures
these can be found in the loop under Jacksonville Center etc.

other new content in the loop includes an endorsement of Jim Webb from the Roanoke Times
http://www.roanoke.com/editorials/wb/89082

and an article from Doug T. describing George Allen's racist behavior in detail

speaking of scary - for an extra creepy Halloween experience check out the dogs on trucks blog, which features info on the seventh scariest man in America

then when you are good and scared go check out Wolfman Jack Taylor on David S.L.'s page

Wolfman Jack Taylor is terribly scary on the outside, but on the inside he is the kind of person who can cheer you up quite a bit when you are sad and disheartened about frightening news stories on scary bad men that rape the Earth.

So if you are in fact a person who is in some way disheartened about this, please read on.

Important Announcement

Thank you Jack Taylor!

Kidfest Etc.

hi everyone

hope you all are well
I had a great visit (and a great snack) at Karen & McCabe's place this morning
Karen & McCabe are the new folks in studio 124 at the Jacksonville Center

they had a sweet little open studio thing this morning with homemade bread etc.
I hope you will make Karen & McCabe feel welcome there

Speaking of the Jacksonville Center Kidfest will happen this weekend.

This is a free, family-friendly event which will feature pumpkin customizing activities for all ages as well as a non-competitive costume contest. It will happen on Sunday October 29 from noon to 4 pm. Billy & Chris might play some music in the silo that day.

From the Floyd Press:
"There will be awards in many different categories as this is an event where every child is acknowledged and everybody wins."

Also in the Floyd Press is news of the Art Tour 10 studio tour. This group will sponsor its first studio tour and sale on November 4 & 5 in the New River Valley. Participating artists include Sarah McCarthy, Jayn Avery, and Carter Holliday. As soon as I get more info on this I promise to post it ASAP on the Northern Most page.

Oh yes here is some other news: Sweetwater Market is a new web support client. Cleverly, they bribed me with food at the interview and that was all she wrote.

Anyway I need to go now to do some research, take care & have a wonderful day.

hi everyone
hope you are well
below is some news on the 2006 National Folk festival - this is from the Richmond Times Dispatch and highlights the work of Haoua Cheick Traore, an entrepreneur from Mali who participated in the Ten Thousand Villages marketplace at this year's event in Richmond.

Haoua will be among the vendors at this year's Floyd Fandango, which begins on Saturday.

have a great evening, take care
-Suzy

Text from the Richmond Times-Dispatch print version on Sunday, October 15 2006. Staff writers include Daniel Nemah, Michael Paul Williams, and Cynthia McMullen.

---...---

The Ten Thousand Villages marketplace had a distinctly Malian flavor yesterday as local residents and friends from the Republic of Mali sought to establish links between the festival and that West African nation.

Malian Ambassador Abdoulaye Diop and Mamou Daffe, director of the upcoming Festival sur le Niger, stood outside the tent enjoying the music and ambience.

Allan Levenberg is a member of Virginian Friends of Mali, created a year ago to promote educational and cultural exchanges.

He expressed hope that the organization could help build an ongoing relationship between Mali and the National Folk Festival that would result in an exchange of musicians.

Daffe said Richmond on the James reminds him of Segou, Mali, which is on the Niger River. His four-day cultural festival is slated for February.

Diop said he was impressed with the variety of music, people, and food at the event here.

"We hope it can be a window of opportunity for us to educate folks about Mali" and generate tourism, he said. "I will be dreaming of the day we will be able to organize such an important cultural event in our country."

MTR benefit at the Jazz Factory

Myriad issues are worth your money, and rarely do we presume to tell you how to spend. In Kentucky, though, we are endowed with natural beauty and majesty, from rolling hills to massive, jagged mountains. That’s worth preserving, many would agree.

But in Kentucky, like other states that share the Appalachian Mountains, the destructive practice of mountaintop removal mining — or blowing apart mountains one level at a time to reach coal seams in a more cost-efficient, less employee-heavy way — is systematically destroying the mountains. The environmental fallout — acid mine drainage in the water, explosions that rock houses from their foundations, and so forth — has quickly deteriorated the quality of life for people who live in the hollers and towns in and around the mountains.

For Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, a social justice organization, MTR is a flagship issue. They’ve been pushing against it for years, and tomorrow they’re sponsoring a benefit at the Jazz Factory featuring live music, readings and a photo exhibition from artists connected to the cause.

The Betweeners and Zach Brock are among the live music performers; Ed McClanahan, Anne Shelby, Erik Reece, Gwyn Hyman-Rubio and others will read.

Author Silas House is the emcee.
