press release from the Jacksonville Center

“Fibers of Memory” Exhibit at the Jacksonville Center

The Jacksonville Center for the Arts will present an exhibition of works by Gibby Waitzkin titled Fibers of Memory beginning January 14, 2006 in the Hayloft Gallery. A special reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, January 14, from 4-6 pm, (Snow date is Saturday, January 21.) The exhibit will remain in place through February 25, 2006.

This body of work is an intimate portrayal of Gibby Waitzkin’s life as it evolves, echoing cherished memories of people, places and objects and her life-long passion for the environment. The works are assembled from recycled materials, which tell their own story as they are transformed into artworks. The artist’s idea is to reconstruct the debris of the past into a new visible surface that conveys a personal journey deeply embedded in the cycle of life.

The pieces blend artist-made paper with photographs, scanned imagery, and dried and encaustic-preserved flowers from her own gardens. For the Jacksonville Center exhibit, Waitzkin will include six new pieces completed recently at her home in Floyd.

The Jacksonville Center is located at 220 Parkway Lane South, Floyd, 1/2 mile south of the stoplight in the town of Floyd. For information on center’s classes, cultural arts business incubator, retail and exhibit opportunities and other programs, please call 540-745-2784 or visit their website at www.jacksonvillecenter.org. From January to March, the Center is open to the public Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm; Saturdays, 10am - 5pm.

Mark Warner orders DNA re-test for Roger Keith Coleman case

January 5, 2005 - Virginia Governor Mark Warner has ordered a re-test of DNA evidence in the case of Roger Keith Coleman, a man who was executed in 1992. The governor cited technological advances in DNA testing as a reason for re-examining this evidence.

If these new tests show that Coleman was innocent of the rape and murder of his sister-in-law in 1981, Coleman will be the first person in the United States to be exonerated after his execution. More...

Sago mine bulletin - one man is alive

loop news for January 4 - Randal McCloy, age 27, was the only man to come out of Sago mine alive after the tragic accident at 6:40 am on January 2. 12 miners lost their lives at Sago, making this West Virginia's deadliest mining accident since 1968.

Families were informed of the deaths early today, just three hours after rumors had started spreading that many, if not all, the miners were in fact alive. Governor Manchin himself had announced that there were 12 survivors, but later said that he was unsure about the information.

Randal McCloy remains in critical condition. He is suffering from hypothermia and is on a ventilator, but he had no broken bones and there was no carbon monoxide found in his body.

Officials at the Federal Department of Labor and the White House have promised an investigation into the events surrounding this accident, including details about how emergency communication was handled.
