Sago mine bulletin - one man is alive
loop news for January 4 - Randal McCloy, age 27, was the only man to come out of Sago mine alive after the tragic accident at 6:40 am on January 2. 12 miners lost their lives at Sago, making this West Virginia's deadliest mining accident since 1968.
Families were informed of the deaths early today, just three hours after rumors had started spreading that many, if not all, the miners were in fact alive. Governor Manchin himself had announced that there were 12 survivors, but later said that he was unsure about the information.
Randal McCloy remains in critical condition. He is suffering from hypothermia and is on a ventilator, but he had no broken bones and there was no carbon monoxide found in his body.
Officials at the Federal Department of Labor and the White House have promised an investigation into the events surrounding this accident, including details about how emergency communication was handled.
