Classes for the 2007 season begin today at the Jacksonville Center for the Arts in Floyd, Virginia. A wide variety of traditional and new media can be experienced through the Center's educational programming, with spring and summer classes now forming in disciplines like blacksmithing, pottery, glass working, digital photography, and the construction of musical instruments.
Community members of all ages are encouraged to inquire about the Greenfire Fund, a newly developed funding initiative at the Jacksonville Center which is designed to help make the Center's educational programming more accessible to residents of Floyd and surrounding areas.

A website has been recently been set up to help support two young Floyd community members who are both battling brain tumors. Site visitors at
www.samefight.org will find information on ways they can help Joshua Cantrell, Chance Harman, and their friends and families cope with the stress and challenges they are currently facing.
A recent benefit in Floyd raised over $17,000 to help cover medical expenses for the two boys. Upcoming benefits include a series of movie nights at the June Bug Center in Floyd and a winter carnival on February 24. On Saturday, February 24, weather permitting, there will be a community art and music gathering at the Jacksonville Center in Floyd. This is a free event, and all are welcome!
Organized by audiopark.org and friends of the Traces library for creative literacy, this event is designed to celebrate democracy, independent learning, community ties, and the coming Spring. Festivities will begin at noon and continue until 5 pm, with live music starting at 2 pm. Light refreshments will be served.
Things to see and hear at this event include multimedia installations by Brad Whitney, Arctic art by Mattiusi Iyaituk, ceramic work by Sarah McCarthy and live music by Billy Miller and Chris Luster. New & old music recordings from Floyd will also be featured, along with books and artifacts from the Traces library.
Area artists, musicians, artisans and land stewards are warmly encouraged to participate in the February 24 installation of the Traces library, which will take place inside the Jacksonville Center residence building. Folks who would like to take an active role in enriching this exhibit environment are invited to bring musical instruments, books, multimedia discs, textiles, art cards, farm products, barter items, etc. for purposes of trade, demonstration, and/or temporary display.
