EASTER EGG HUNT AT MATTHEWS FARM

MATTHEWS LIVING HISTORY FARM MUSEUM will open its 2006 season on Saturday, April 8, 2006, from 2-5pm with an Easter Egg Hunt, garden preparation and planting and baby animals.

Hilda Bauer of “Heavens View Farm” in Galax, VA will be providing the naturally colored (hard boiled) eggs, for our Easter Egg Hunt. The eggs come from Araucana, Black Giants and Dominique chickens. Araucana chickens are known for their ability to lay colored eggs of shades varying from turquoise to a deep olive as well as shades of brown. If you have not seen these eggs before you will be amazed. Hilda will also be bringing along some of her chickens to the farm and giving a little talk and answering questions. These naturally colored eggs will be hidden in the yard around the house and the hunt for the eggs will begin at 3 pm.

Garden preparation and early planting will be led by the Master Gardeners of the
Blue Ridge. The Master Gardeners will be demonstrating and encouraging others, especially children, to help with the planting of onions, peas and lettuce.

A special pen will be set up for our baby animals. The public will be allowed to come in and enjoy the babies. Susan Story of Matthews Farm will be in the pen with the babies to help out and answer any questions.

In celebration of Easter, Hot Cross Buns will be baked by Matthews Farm volunteers and will be available while supplies last.

To reach Matthews Farm travel U. S. 58 to Meadow Creek Road, travel down Meadow Creek Rd about 2 miles and turn left on White Pine Road, and go about a mile. Matthews Farm is located at 476 White Pine Road, Galax.
